Why being a teacher in Finland is synonymous with prestige and excellence

April 24, 2025

Instituto Escalae

Finnish education is considered one of the best in the world. But beyond its results in international tests, what really distinguishes its system is the way it values its teachers. In Finland, being a teacher is not just about teaching: it is about leading, transforming and building society.

An educational model where teaching is a priority

In Finland, teaching is one of the most respected and sought-after professions for young people. Every year, thousands of students apply to teacher training programs, but only a small percentage are admitted. This rigorous selection process ensures that only the most committed and high-potential profiles gain access to training.

Initial training also lasts five years and includes a balanced combination of theory, classroom practice, educational research and pedagogical reflection. This creates highly trained professionals capable of making autonomous decisions in the classroom and adapting to the needs of their students.

Keys to Finnish success in teacher education

There are three key elements that explain why Finland has succeeded in positioning teaching as a prestigious profession:

  1. High-quality trainingFuture teachers are trained in universities that integrate educational theory with real practices from the beginning. It is not limited to technical content, but focuses on comprehensive professional development.

  2. Professional autonomyProfessional autonomy: Unlike other systems, in Finland there are no rigid inspections or standardized controls. It is based on the premise that teachers are competent professionals who can lead pedagogical processes with autonomy and responsibility.

Social trust in teachersFinnish society trusts its educators. This trust translates into institutional support, professional recognition and job stability, which motivates teachers to stay up-to-date and committed to their work.

What we can learn from Latin America

Although it is not possible to replicate the Finnish educational model in its entirety, it is feasible to adopt some of its principles to strengthen teaching in other contexts. Among them:

  • To focus on processes of continuous teacher trainingrelevant and linked to practice.

  • Generate environments where teachers can collaborate, innovate collaborate, innovate and reflect on their professional practice..

  • To grant teachers greater autonomy greater autonomy, support and recognition within the educational systems.

Promote public policies that dignify the teaching career and encourage pedagogical leadership.

TeachersPRO: Continuing education based on trust and practice

At TeachersPRO we believe that transforming education begins with transforming the teacher's professional experience. Our development model combines learning challenges, artificial intelligence mentoring and peer assessment, allowing teachers to develop critical skills based on their daily practice.

Inspired by experiences such as the Finnish one, we are committed to an approach where teaching is seen for what it really is: a strategic, innovative and essential profession for the future of our societies.

More than a decade ago, Bill Gates reminded us of a simple truth: no one improves without useful, frequent, practice-based feedback — not athletes, not musicians, and not teachers. Yet in many education systems, teachers still receive little structured support to grow, despite facing increasing demands, diverse classrooms, and constant change.
